BCG's Legal and Risk teams work where a wrong answer has consequences. On day one, their biggest problem with AI was exactly that: answers they couldn't trust.

Their Chief Legal Officer and Chief Risk Officer wanted an AI-first mindset, and were already building AI tools for legal work. Usage was high. The open question was whether people's thinking had kept up with the tools.

Around 350 people took 15 Days of AI: fifteen short lessons done on their own work, over three weeks. We measured their AI skill before and after.

The numbers

350

Two teams learned together

People across BCG's Legal and Risk teams, worldwide.

65 to 83

AI skill rose by more than a quarter

Average AIQ out of 100, before and after.

297 of 319

Nearly everyone got better

More than nine in ten improved their score.

6% to 71%

Working well with AI became the norm

The share of people at the top level of AI skill, before and after.

59 to 11

Low confidence almost disappeared

The number of people rating their confidence 2 or lower out of 5.

AIQ is our assessment of how well someone works with AI, scored out of 100. AIQ figures are for the 319 people who took it before and after. The top level is a score of 80 or more.

Where the change was

Average AIQ score in each skill, out of 100. Grey is before, red is after.

Telling AI what you want

Before: 60
After: 80

Judging what comes back

Before: 69
After: 82

One thing we learned

The fix for not trusting AI was learning to check it.

The teams that worried most about wrong answers made their gains in the two skills that deal with it: giving AI clear instructions, and judging what comes back.
